Creative writing extends past writing the ever-favored short story and novel. It also encompasses playwriting, screenwriting, songwriting, journalism, oral storytelling, and much more. And because schools don't always have the time or resources to teach students about these career options during the day, I'm going to give it my best shot during an after-school program at one of the middle schools this spring. Yay!
Over the past few months, I've been busy writing curriculum for students to learn about the various types of writing through instruction and practice. But, let's be honest, it won't be all that exciting if they have to hear my voice and look at my ugly mug each day we meet. So...I'm going to invite members of the community to come in and explain the type of writing they do, either professionally or as a hobby, and tell us how and why they do it. Wait, there's more. We'll even venture out on a few field trips. Can it get any better? Well, I have a middle schooler, so I already know the answer to that question. Snacks are a must.
To say I'm excited is an understatement! More details to come.
